The Costa del Golf hits another hole in one
The Costa del Sol is Europe’s number-one golf destination, as new figures show half of all European tourists who come to Spain to play, choose the region as their favourite.
Malaga’s tourist board recently revealed 2013 was the best year of the last five for golf tourism on the Costa del Sol and in the Cadiz area. Is it any wonder?
There are more than 90, 18-hole golf courses and golfing resorts in Andalucia, of which around 60 are on the Costa del Sol, making it a perfect destination for the golf enthusiast. There is even a good selection of nine-hole courses offering great value for those who want to practice their swing.
But it’s not just quantity, it’s quality that counts.
This area of southern Spain, which has even become known as the Costa del Golf, is world-famous for the number of quality courses, with four ranked in Europe’s top 10. A total of 34 are listed among the Spain’s top 100, with three courses in the top five, according to the specialist website www.top100golfcourses.co.uk.
Moreover, the Costa boasts year-round sunshine and easy access from abroad, with airports at both ends of the coastal strip, in Malaga and Gibraltar.
Over the past 30 years, the region has built a sustainable, high-end golf travel industry that continues to go from strength to strength.
With European tour venues, such as: Valderrama, home to the 1997 Ryder Cup; La Reserva, now home to the NH Collection Open; and Finca Cortesin; as well as stay-and-play resorts like La Cala, Almenara or La Quinta, the Costa del Sol is the perfect destination for anyone wanting to play a round or two.
Further boosting its reputation as a world-class resort, Sotogrande S.A. and the NH Hotel Group have reached an agreement with The European Tour to stage a brand-new tournament in the region. The NH Collection Open will see some of the best players in the game compete at the prestigious La Reserva de Sotogrande Golf Club from April 3-6.
