Before describing the marina itself, it is worth recalling some of the general advantages of Puerto de la Duquesa, including its several kilometers of pristine beach and the championship Robert Trent Jones-designed 18-hole golf course, built on a nice slope overlooking the sea and port… The municipality of Manilva as a whole offers many attractions such as Roman-built sulfuric baths that are still in use, great hiking country, and even a local tradition of sweet wine production (as in other Malaga villages). Accommodation in Puerto de La Duquesa ranges from single homes to semi-detached cottages, middle-scale apartments, and luxury penthouses. Look for the residential complexes of La Duquesa Apartments (on the golf course), Urbanización Puerto de la Duquesa (at the Marina), and many more.
With regard to the marina itself, there’s no need to be a boating enthusiast to enjoy oneself. Some of the best restaurants on the western Costa del Sol are right here, offering Italian, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Spanish, Japanese and French food. There are grocers and other boutiques and services, and a craft market is held once a twice a week.

There are 328 moorings between eight and twenty metres wide, about 25% of which are available for sale. Last but not least when it comes to Puerto de La Duquesa, it’s that old adage “location, location, location…”: if you are driving from here, you can reach the Ronda or the Malaga airport in 90 minutes while Puerto Banus and Marbella are less than an hour away. Sotogrande, Algeciras, and Tarifa are about 20, 40, and 60 minutes away respectively, the first of these being Spain’s oldest luxury holidaying resort and the last two being the country’s ferry gateways to Morocco, where you can find adventure whether you go on the safest of guided tours or venture into Berber land driving an all-terrain vehicle. Andalusia itelf–land of the Moors and Bandoleros and flamenco country par excellence–is a nice place to have an adventure too. For day trips or longer escapades you can head to countless destinations like Tarifa, Granada, Cadiz, Seville, Cordoba, the various natural parks, mountain ranges (“Sierras”), and the list goes on.

Estepona is a tested alternative to Marbella for those who seek to buy a property in a privileged resort where good weather and sport can be enjoyed. Although there is evidence of prehistoric settlements here, the area became somewhat important in Roman times, as evidenced by a number of archaeological sites. Estepona received the first version of its present name under the Moors, when it was a fortress known as Al-extebunna.

Over the last twenty years what had become a sleepy traditional fishing village grew quickly and received a makeover due to the appeal of its privileged micro climate and stunning location at the foot of the spectacular 1450-metre high Sierra Bermeja mountain. Estepona has conserved the majority of its traditional neighbourhoods but the main roads have been enlarged and many new homes built, giving property investors plenty to choose from in an area favoured by expatriates and holidaymakers alike.

Comprising the pleasure marina as well as the small fishing harbour, the port offers a host of advantages to property owners. Living or holidaying here means not only sea and mountain views, but also quick access to boats, sporting facilities and some of the town’s best nightlife, shops, supermarkets, and restaurants. Unlike in other ports, there’s no need to relinquish the beach here: on the contrary, the adjacent natural cove Playa del Cristo, a five-minute walk from the marina, is considered the prettiest in Estepona.

Sporting facilities are excellent and improving here in Estepona itself, and the Costa del Sol’s renowned 70 or so golf courses are all within reasonably quick access, the closest ones being Valle Romano and Estepona Golf. Estepona also has a well-known equestrian centre just a 10 minutes drive eastward on the N340.

Residential opportunities currently abound in the area, many of which in the form of luxury apartment complexes. To mention just one of these, the brand new Doncella Beach is situated at the end of Playa del Cristo on a naturally elevated point, with views from the individual terraced apartments to Morocco and Gibraltar. Apart from its lush gardens, the neo-classic designed complex features a fully equipped spa and gymnasium, as well as yoga room and swimming pool with pool bar. Also look for other complexes with comparable amenities including but not limited to Alcazaba Beach, Marina Bay, El Corral, El Faro, Parque Central, and Puerto Paraiso.

Beaches:

Primarily of course there are the renowned beaches, specifically Playa “La Rada” which is the primary beach in Estepona. It has been recognised as a blue band beach due to the cleanliness and environmental qualities. The beach is c. 3 kilometres long and situated on it are “Chiringuitos”, beach bars that serve drinks and food throughout the day in peak seasons.

“El Cristo” is the next beach west of La Rada and is a small, tranquil beach of under 700 metres. It contains a beautiful chiringuito that will make even the most average of days feel like a topical holiday.

East of La Rada is the pebbled beach of “Punta de la Plata” which spans 2.5 kilometres.

Cinemas:

There is a cinema in Estepona that shows films every Thursday. It is situated in the Cultural Centre Padre Manuel with an entrance fee of €3.00. The cinema shows the films in its original language with Spanish subtitles. Films start at 9 p.m. For information about what´s showing, visit their website.

Shopping:

Aside from the markets that take place in Estepona, there are also a large number of shops in the highstreet (Calle Real and Calle Terraza). These shops are mostly clothes and shoe shops such as Mango, United Colours of Benetton and other smaller, independent stores. If you want to visit a mall, La Cañada is the closest, situated in Puerto Banús, here you will fine a large supermarket, home supplies, electrical goods, clothes, shoe and jewellery shops and much more. For food shopping, there are a couple of Mercadonas throughout the town and a Carrefour at the Palacio de Congresos entrance to Estepona.

Restaurants:

Given that Estepona is traditionally a fishing village, it is suffice to say that the fish is extremely varied and of great quality in restaurants. The fish is also extremely fresh as the fishermen set up a market in the port at 06:00 to sell the days catch. In summer, chiringuitos are often a great place to eat fresh fish such as Mussels, (Mejillones), Clams, (Almejas), Tuna (Atun) and Swordfish (Pez Espada). Chiringuitos also provide Paella and it is great fun to order some Boquerones or Sardinas (Anchovies or Sardines) that will then be cooked on a barbecue on the beach. The chiringuitos are a nice relaxed place to eat situated at intervals on the beach you can pop into one during the day directly form the beach in a bikini, or at night in smarter clothing. Chiringuitos are a perfect place for families as the children are able to run around on the beach whilst the adults mull over a bottle of wine.

If however you would prefer to eat in a more sophisticated restaurant there are a number situated in Estepona.

“La Rada” specialises in fish and is situated very close the “paseo”. It is perfect for those wanting to try fresh fish in a sophisticated setting.

“Los Rosales” also specialises in fish and is situated very close the “Plaza de las Flores”. This restaurant offers a more casual setting whilst still delivering exceptional service and food.

There are many other restaurants specialising in fish, but Argentinean restaurants are fast appearing all over Estepona and these restaurants offer the very best meats.

“Sur” is another Argentinean restaurant that in summer offers “al fresco” dining on the square with the company of a fountain and sea views. In winter you will be seated inside a relaxed and tasteful restaurant with an open fire oven. The restaurant offers beautiful meats and chicken, a mixed grill to share and homemade pizzas. The salads are also very good and varied and the French fries are delicious. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere, is well priced and is a lovely place to eat.

“El Facon” is the final Argentinean restaurant that is worth visiting. In summer it is worth dining on the terrace, but in winter you will be seated inside an open and dimly lit restaurant. If you are just after tapas, there are a number of restaurants that do just tapas and raciones. “Las Gitanillas” for example does a large range of raciones so you can order a selection of things to try and share. The food at this restaurant is traditional Malaga food such as, battered cod “abadejo”, peppers stuffed with crab meat in a cheese sauce, clams, prawns, and many other things. On the other hand if all you want is just tapas and a drink, “Bar la Palma“ is a lovely café situated on the main street of Calle Terraza and they have a very large selection of traditional tapas foods, if you would like a proper meal there, they also have a very good menu.

Nightlife

The “Puerto Deportivo” or port is an extremely popular venue for tourists and locals alike to flock to throughout the year. There are a number of clubs, bars and restaurants that make up the nightlife famous to the Costa del Sol. If you are not the type to enjoy loud clubs and smoky bars, the port also offers a romantic setting in which to enjoy a meal whilst watching the sun set over beautiful yachts.

However, if clubbing is your thing, you will also find a wealth of places to go within the town centre and the port. Plató 68 is one of the most popular nightclubs in the Costa del Sol with people coming in from Sotogrande and Marbella just to spend a Saturday night there. Its opening hours are from 12 a.m. to 7.a.m but it isn´t worth going before 2 a.m. The entrance fee is €15 and includes a complimentary drink. Ático is another popular nightclub that closes at 5 a.m. This nightclub offers music that is currently popular with the Spaniards. This includes English and American music as well as Spanish and Latin American. It is recommended to arrive at around 1-2 a.m. as most people don´t arrive until then. Ático is situated close to the marina and also has upstairs terraces which offer beautiful views of the port. La Bulla is situated in the centre of Estepona on Calle Real, the main pedestrian street, and Avenida España, the principal road through the town. It offers a wonderful, dim atmosphere with an interesting decor and is mostly popular with the Spanish.

Milonga is also situated in the centre of town on Calle Caridad, the street just behind the principal pedestrianised street. This golf course is a world renowned golf course that is actually situated closer to Benahavís but is considered one of Estepona´s best courses. Museums:

The Municipal Museum is an archaeological museum situated in the Plaza de Torros, (Bullring) and is open from Monday-Friday 09:00-15:00 and on Saturday 10:00-14:00.

The museum has a number of exhibits, including archaeological, palaeontological, “Taurino”, (in memory of the greatest bullfighter from Estepona) and ethnological.

Ferias and Saint´s Days

Unlike in England, Spain recognises Saint´s Days and each town and municipality has it´s own day to celebrate. The two main “ferias” or holidays that Estepona recognise are San Isidro Labrador and the Virgen del Carmen. San Isidro is the patron saint of farmers and of the countryside. This festival is celebrated on the 15th of May every year and is a must see for tourists and locals alike. The town becomes a buzz of atmosphere and camraderie, the streets are paved with palms and processions of horses, oxen, donkeys, bulls and floats parade throughout the town to the tune of a marching band. Later you will be able to enjoy the numerous temporary bars erected throughout the town. This festival you must not miss.

Estepona´s main feria takes place at the beginning of July and this is considered to be one huge party in which the whole town comes together to celebrate. At about 15:00 on Calle Real, the main pedestrian street, bars open outside of existing bars, music blares and everyone has a great time. In the two main squares, Plaza de Huevo and Plaza de las Flores, large stalls open selling traditional Andalucían food and most people there are in traditional dress. Come the evening, the Recinto Ferial (where the Wednesday market is held) is packed with people enjoying the temporary fair ground that is built for the occasion. This feria is definitely not one to miss and usually begins on the first Wednesday of July until Sunday. On the Saturday there is another parade similar to that of San Isidro.

The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of fishermen and this fiesta enjoys a very similar atmosphere to the fiesta of San Isidro. Every year a large statue of the Virgen (Virgin) is carried down the paso marítimo and set upon a boat which then goes around to each fishing boat and blesses it. All boats are welcome and religious conotations aside, it is a wonderful party! This holiday takes place on the 16th of July every year. This is not a festival exclusive to Estepona but is great fun and an interesting parade to watch.

It must be noted that all shops, pharmacies and banks close on the day of the fiesta so don´t get caught out!

Markets:

Estepona has several markets that offer a variation of goods from fruits and vegetables, handbags and clothes and varying souvenirs such as ceramic ash trays, butter dishes and olive bowls. The market on Wednesday takes place in the Recinto Ferial at the top of Estepona. This market is where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, a large variety of nuts, olives and dried fruits and basic things such as cheap socks and shoes. This market is where many Spaniards go to buy their food. The Sunday market takes place down at the port, this market is generally designed for tourists and sells souveneirs and counterfeit bags and sunglasses as well as jewellery, clothes and shoes. There are buses that go to the markets that generally are set up by 09:00 and shut down at around 14:00.

The fish market is situated in the port of Estepona at 6 a.m. and if you are an early riser, or just interested, this a must see event. Hundreds of different types of fish that have literally been plucked out of the sea that day are displayed on stalls, although you can´t buy any of the fish it is a chance to see what Estepona was historically famous for.

In the centre of town is the covered market or “Mercado de Abastos” which is situated next to the “Torre de Reloj” or clock tower (pictured below). This market is good for fresh fish, fruit and vegetable and is open everyday, although finding fresh fruit is not difficult in this town as there are many family owned shops throughout the town that sell freshly picked fruit and vegetables.

The “Casa de Cultura” is situated in the “Plaza de la Flores” in the centre of town and contains varying art exhibitions for more information about what´s on visit Andalucia´s main website.The lighthouse of Punta Doncella is situated at the end of the “paseo maritimo” was constructed in 1861 and stands at 21 metres tall and has visibility from the sea from 18 sea miles.

“Selwo Wildlife Park” is situated in Selwo, Estepona and is considered the largest nature park in Spain. Generally the park is open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and children under the age of 2 go free. The animals live in a natural habitat and you will find yourself traveling via 4×4 vehicles through breathtaking scenery whilst seeing lions, bears, reptiles and many more.
